Slipped

Didn't make it to Keller tonight. It's okay, I've seen him many times. We went with Thai food and an evening at home instead. Here is the music I am listening to in place of going to a concert. Anyone familiar with Guitar Hero will know "Even Rats"

Sample their music on MySpace- (the full album has a lot more to offer)

Enjoy

Friday Morning History

After reading a lot of wiki about the Persian War and the Battle of Thermopylae, I am increasingly excited about the release of the film adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300. Reviews of the graphic novel are mixed, with some saying it conveys the overall theme without worrying too much about history, which is fine- I just took a crash course (I won’t have the personal connections and problems that I had with LOTR or Troy).

One way or the other, I think this movie will work. If the theme of self-sacrifice for the greater good in the face of impossible opposition isn’t enough, the epic scale and stylized action should be reason enough to see it.

Stumble Upon

If you love internet videos, but don’t know where to start (or what you feel like watching) try StumbleUpon. You just pick some categories of interest and hit the Stumble button and the videos come from all the major internet video providers. Select the Thumb-Up button if you like it or the Thumbs-Down if you don’t. The site will show you videos based on your choices. It’s like a choose-your-own adventure for videos. This makes it very addictive and in a lot of ways, better than regular television.

You can always change categories to get a wider sampling of videos and it's best if you sign up so it remembers your choices. Another cool feature is that you can easily look back at all the videos from each category (likes, dislikes, non-votes).

Snow Day #1 Valentine’s Day #2

First off a lot has been happening, believe me- it’s not that we suddenly became boring and had nothing to post.

Between Maggie’s masters thesis, the first month of the new semester, and everything else we’ve been doing there has been little time to post. Sometimes you just have to live and not report on it.

I’ve also found that we have more readers than I thought. I’ve had several people (some of them kind of expected, but more of them not) tell me they enjoyed things they found on the blog- but they don’t comment. So it seems some of the imaginary audience is not so imaginary. Feel free to comment or just to read- it’s whatever you want. I’m just glad people are checking in every so often. So I’ll post a bit more frequently to avoid losing the readers we do have.

Now that I said all that, I’ll abbreviate the rest.

  • Soul De Cuba is not all it’s cracked up to be, but they do have Carib
  • Christopher Martin’s is -better than I expected – Maggie had one of her top meals ever last night
  • Wii Play rules, but maybe only if you didn’t already have an extra remote (video of Maggie fishing to follow- she’s a gold medallist- I suck at it)
  • I still love marzipan
  • Matt Belknap and aspecialthing.com have their first comedy CD out
  • "House Hunting 07" moves to the mortgage broker phase in the coming weeks
  • The student director project is shaping up to include a lot more than I could have imagined, but doesn’t start until after the break- Drama Club for actors, Creative Writing courses for script ideas- and lots of individualized production roles for my students.
  • Freakonomics was really good
  • The Children of Men the novel was ok- very different from the film, but if you like that you should check this out
  • We preordered the new Harry Potter book
  • I'll be 29 soon

With the snow day (really an Ice Day so we still don’t get to use the six-foot toboggan I got for Maggie) falling on Valentine’s Day, we get to have more of a Valentine’s mini weekend. So, I can’t stay at the computer too much longer. There is still a lot to do.
