Lyrically Retarded

I like music. I listen to a lot of music. I care about many aspects of it including the lyrics, but often I find that what I think they are saying is very different from what they are actually saying.

While listening to Run, Run, Run today, I realized that, yet again, I had fooled myself into thinking something for years, only to find out that I was wrong.

I know this happens all the time and is the fodder for some pretty lousy commercials and comedians’ bits, but humor me and do me a favor-

Finish this Velvet Underground Lyric (without listening or looking it up):

You gotta run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run

Everything You Never Knew You Wanted

That’s right, tag sale time is around the corner and we’re selling you our stuff.

But I’m not here to talk about the tag sale itself. I’m here to talk about the awesome flyer that Malcolm made and how it has apparently offended or frightened someone in our building.

I hung it in the mailroom yesterday evening and it was gone by the time I got home from work today.

I hung a censored version (I took out the clown and even cut off the words “April Fool’s”) in the same place just to see if it’s the clown people object to- or if it’s tag sales themselves.

If this one comes down I’m breaking out the ladder and making people work to get rid of these signs.

Remember Jack?

I don’t know about you, but I used to love the Deep Thoughts segments on SNL. Back in my SNL era (Sandler, Farley, Myers, Hartman, Nealon, Rock, and Spade) it was as good as anything else on the show.

Well, thanks to the New Yorker I have found that love again. This time out in the "Shouts & Murmurs" section, Handey gives aspiring artists ideas for paintings. And if sold he will take “approximately all the money.”

My favorite:
Stampede of Nudes
The trouble with most paintings of nudes is that there isn’t enough nudity. It’s usually just one woman lying there, and you’re looking around going, “Aren’t there any more nudes?” This idea solves that.

What has frightened these nudes? Is it the lightning in the background? Or did one of the nudes just spook? You don’t know, and this creates tension.

Other examples can be found here.

Who do you look like?

My Heritage has a facial recognition program that allows you to put up your pictures for comparison to 3,200 celebrities. Results vary greatly between pictures. I went from Mark Ruffalo to Mother Teresa- with a very similar accuracy percentage rating.

Better than an Interactive Map of Mars

You may have tried this already, but if not...
Google the word "failure" (or the words "miserable failure"). See what comes up.

And if you want a few seconds of entertainment you can look at the Google map of Mars.

In Celebration of the 2 Hour Episode

If you have a lot of time on your hands and an unhealthy obsession with 24 (or if you live in LA- Elise) you may want to check out Jack Tracker. It’s a really fun use of Google maps.

I particularly like that they point out that Jack’s car must have had a time travel device in order to get from CTU to Hidden Valley (47.28 miles) in ten minutes.

Also the use of Flickr to show the deaths of all the people in the series labeled with a big red X is a fun way to track the carnage.

Happy Birthday Joe
