First and Last
Here is a question that I like to ask people from time to time.Play along won’t you-
1. What was the first album (could be a record, tape, CD, 8-track, reel-to-reel, or wax cylinder) that you ever bought (this could be your own money or just something you asked parents for or wanted as a gift). The only thing to keep in mind is that it has to be something you wanted. Please include your age and any other comments that you care to share.
2. What was the most recent album (same rules as above) that you purchased or received?
Me:
My first was in the third grade (I think that would make me eight)- Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys. On tape- which I wore out from listening to so often.
My most recent was a gift (from Elise and Matt through Amazon)- Taught to be Proud by Tea Leaf Green.
Not sure what this says about me or what people could possibly do with this information, but I think the responses I got from work friends this past Friday were interesting. If nothing else, it’s a nice walk down a musical memory lane.

Hold an Old Friend's Hand (tape), by Tiffany, probably late 80s, so I think I was 9 or 10. My first cd was The Stranger, by Billy Joel, which I bought used in the early to mid-90s (we were slow to get a cd player). I can't think of my last music cd--it's all a blur since I lost them all en route to Ohio--the last cd I got was Barrel Fever by David Sedaris (a spoken word for Christmas from my stepmother).
I, also, was in third grade when I received my first albums. I got them both on the same occasion - can't remember if it was for Christmas or my birthday. Whatever the occasion, I was delighted to own both Def Leppard's Hysteria and Tiffany's self-titled debut album.
Yeah I forgot about your CD loss Lauren. Did you get an iPod.
My first CD was Nirvana's Bleach. I remember having a discussion with the salesman about the importance of the first CD purchase. I don't know if he thought it was really monumental or if he just really loved the relatively new technology.
I already had Nevermind by this time and the album (although a bit rough) ruled.
My first real, store bought cassette was a dual purchase; Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet," bundled with Cinderella's self-titled debut. I think I was about seven.
I can't remember my first CD purchase/gift, but I think it was either a gifted "The Cult" album, or possibly a stolen Bauhaus CD. What can I say, it was the early 90s.
Most recent purchase was, sadly, the new Tenacious D album. What a disappointment.
Rock. I remember the Christmas where Elise and Jillian got the Slippery when Wet album on vinyl. Man do I remember them screaming in unison.
I paid no attention to the D this time around; mostly because I didn’t have the time. Sorry to hear that it sucked.
Because I am in part looking for good new music, I would like to know the last album people were excited about. Or what people are listening to now (even if it’s old).
We certainly did scream when we got Slippery When Wet. It was very exciting!
The first album that I remember getting was the Grease soundtrack (on vinyl). I also remember a Muppet Show soundtrack that was probably around the same time.
When I first bought CDs I chose the Cure's wish and the fu-schnickens on the same day (for some reason).
My Xmas gift CDs have all been great: the Marie Antoinette soundtrack, the new Gwen Stefani CD and the great set that Matt bought me - Left of the Dial. Dan, check out the New Pornographers if you're looking for new music. The two albums that I like best are Electric Version and Twin Cinema.
I remember that first CD purchase, but wasn't it Das EFX and the Cure?
I will check out the New Pornographers- I was getting tired of the old ones.
Damnit, it was Das EFX. You can understand the mistake though I'm sure.
